Care at a glance

Know your plant

Golden Xanadu forms a self-heading canopy of increasingly divided foliage. New leaves may open yellow-green or chartreuse and deepen toward green, creating several tones across the plant. [1]

Light and placement

Give the canopy bright indirect light, with space around its spreading leaves. Use the self-heading outline as the display: it does not need the training given to a long trailing vine. [4]

Watering

  1. Let the top of the mix dry before watering again; keep the root zone lightly moist rather than constantly saturated. [3]

  2. Water thoroughly, then empty the saucer. [5]

Soil and pot choice

Use a loose houseplant medium with coarse bark or similar open particles to help drainage. Match the pot to the rootball rather than the width of the canopy. [3]

Use a pot with drainage holes. [6]

Temperature and humidity

Keep conditions warm and steady. Philodendrons prefer humidity but often adapt to ordinary room air; protect foliage from cold drafts and hot vents. [4]

Feeding

Feed during active growth at the product label rate; pause when growth slows. [7]

Repotting

  1. Check roots when the plant becomes pot-bound. Repot during active growth into a slightly larger container; prepare support for the canopy while moving it. [4]

  2. Keep the original planting depth; settle fresh mix around roots and water in. [8]

Propagation

  1. Use a healthy stem section only when an accessible node can be identified. A node is the stem joint from which a leaf and new growth emerge. [9]

  2. Cut below the node, remove lower leaves, and place the bare node in moist propagation mix. Maintain warmth and indirect light. Pot separately after a root system develops. [9]

Pruning and growth

Bushy philodendrons usually need little shaping. Retain healthy leaves and remove damaged foliage carefully, wearing gloves when making cuts. [3]

Problems and next checks

Yellowing or wilting

Possible causes
  • Dryness or waterlogged roots.
Checks to distinguish them
  • Feel the mix; inspect drainage and root firmness.
Low-risk next step
Correct moisture according to the watering section.
When to seek expert help
Spreading softness: seek horticultural advice.

Bleached patches

Possible causes
  • Possible sun injury.
Checks to distinguish them
  • Review recent exposure changes.
Low-risk next step
Shield from intense sun; acclimate gradually.
When to seek expert help
Continuing lesions: seek horticultural advice.

Cottony spots, bumps or webbing

Possible causes
  • Possible sap-feeding pests.
Checks to distinguish them
  • Inspect both leaf surfaces and stem joints.
Low-risk next step
Separate; identify before treatment.
When to seek expert help
Persistent infestation: seek horticultural advice.

Seasonal indoor care

As daylight weakens, review the window position and rotate the pot for even exposure. [12]

Feed during active growth. In slower periods, wait for surface drying before watering; do not keep the mix saturated. [3]

Children and pets

Safety

Philodendrons are harmful if eaten, and their sap can irritate skin. Wear gloves when cutting and keep the plant away from children. [3]

Philodendron species contain insoluble calcium oxalates that can irritate a pet’s mouth and digestive tract when chewed. [13]

Human poisoning (U.S.): 1-800-222-1222. Medical emergencies: 911. [14]

Pet poisoning: veterinarian; ASPCA 888-426-4435 (consultation fee). [15]

Similar plants

Golden Xanadu’s broad, lobed canopy differs from Ring of Fire’s narrower serrated foliage. The yellow-green color of new Golden Xanadu leaves is part of its described appearance. [1][16]
