Ahuizotl
Nahua water-being accounts in the Florentine Codex · Mexica material representation · Historical and contemporary scholarly interpretation
Also recorded as Ahuítzotl, Auitzotl
A small dark figure waits in the water, its long tail ending in a hand. The Florentine Codex makes that startling feature part of a dangerous encounter at the bank. Later interpretations ask how animal likeness, sacred water and pictured names meet in the ahuizotl, without settling it as an ordinary otter. [1][3][2]
