A field guide to the extraordinary
Black Shuck
East Anglian black-dog accounts · Elizabethan providential writing · Norfolk coastal and country-house traditions
Also recorded as Shuck, Old Shuck, Old Shock
Black Shuck gathers East Anglian accounts of a strange black dog, with important differences between records. Fleming’s 1577 church-storm pamphlet, Opie’s coastal Old Shock and an 1850 report of a shaggy churchyard visitor do not describe exactly the same creature. The enduring name connects stories without proving a single animal. [1][2][3]
