Names & Creature Profile

Dokkaebi is the Korean name retained throughout this file. Goblin is a common English convenience, but it can import expectations about creatures from quite different traditions. Im Dong-kwon’s Academy of Korean Studies entry gives several associated names and forms rather than a single anatomy. Kim Jong-dae’s English essay likewise moves between narrative beings, god-like functions and troublesome presences. These accounts make the name’s use in a particular story or rite more useful than an assumed universal English classification. [1][2]

The collection’s Hidden Folk shelf is a reading route. It places games, object transformations and livelihood encounters together for comparison, while their named tellers and regional settings remain visible. The shelf does not determine Korean religious categories.

Homeland & Tradition

Kim Jong-dae discusses fishermen near the Yellow Sea, regional disease associations in Jeolla and distinct Jeju ritual contexts. His geographical examples show why stories for children cannot stand for the entire tradition. The National Folk Museum’s 2022 Mysterious Village exhibition similarly places Dokkaebi among beings connected with livelihood. Its sea-light scene translates a catch-related association into an immersive display. The exhibition description is an institutional interpretation, not a transcript of every local rite or a record that its digital scene has been observed. [2][5]

A further named locality enters the museum’s April 2024 programme. The Site of Dokkaebi reworks a Pyeongtaek-area site tale through farmers’ music, percussion and spoken humour. The announced performance gives villagers and performers roles in the encounter, rather than placing a solitary monster on a path. Its regional basis is a credited adaptation, distinct from the exhibition’s Yellow Sea catch-related lights. [9]

Historical Record

The sources consulted here are modern Korean reference and interpretive works, with earlier records cited inside them. Im Dong-kwon connects Bihyeong’s bridge-building narrative with Samguk Yusa, while Kim Jong-dae discusses a fifteenth-century invocation in Seokbo Sangjeol. Those earlier texts were not independently consulted for this manuscript. Their reported narrative settings must also be distinguished from the dates of the books preserving them. The entry consequently makes no absolute first-attestation claim and does not assign a precise birth date to Dokkaebi belief. [1][2]

Bihyeong’s narrative setting and the compilation preserving it supply different kinds of dates. A direct edition-and-passage comparison remains needed before those mediated references can support a chronology of the name. The modern articles do not fill that textual gap.

Appearance & Signs

Hyuk-Jin Lee’s 2023 published abstract identifies a debate over horns and iron clubs, including the claim that this familiar appearance was imposed under Japanese colonial rule and a competing image of a hornless furry figure with a wooden club. Lee proposes examining literary and visual evidence instead of deciding identity from assumptions. The full paper was not read here, so its examples and final detailed argument are not reconstructed from the abstract. The existence of this debate is itself enough to resist compulsory hornlessness. The finished original folio selects a playful invitation on a dim path, with a partly obscured figure and old broom. Its basis is the object-transformation and encounter motifs in the consulted Korean accounts. That selection does not resolve the scholarly visual debate or establish a compulsory shape. The obscured appearance leaves room for the text’s differences, while light and composition remain original artistic choices. A red, muscular Oni figure cannot become a Dokkaebi merely by changing its caption; the narrative context still matters.

Nature & Powers

The Academy entry includes a Dokkaebi repeatedly defeated in wrestling and a being whose apparent body proves to be an old broom after it is tied up. These details make supernatural strength coexist with vulnerability or surprise. Lee Jong-ho’s 2004 essay on the official Korean government portal also discusses transformation, sounds without a clear visible body and familiar implements. His comparisons with other countries are his interpretive framing, not independently established proof that all neighbouring figures descend from one Korean original. [1][4]

Marishel Lochan’s 2020 retelling makes endurance part of the reversal. A market-goer wrestles through the night, ties his defeated challenger to a tree and returns to find agricultural implements. The delayed discovery changes the meaning of his apparent victory: the familiar objects are recognized only after the extraordinary opponent has gone. This specific modern telling supplies an outcome, rather than a universal rule about overcoming every Dokkaebi. [8]

Tales & Encounters

Grace Kim’s university-hosted 2017 research paper includes two interviews with Korean American informants she knew. Brian Kim recalls a sieve that occupies a Dokkaebi through counting its holes until morning. Seonghoon Lee recalls his grandfather using stories of both good and bad Dokkaebi to explain behaviour and later describes a wish-granting implement with some uncertainty. These are named, situated recollections, not a survey of all Korean belief. The author’s undergraduate course-paper status and small interview base remain part of the source description. [3]

The interviews are valuable because they do not produce an identical answer. One memory emphasizes a clever diversion; another emphasizes being watched and the changing stories told as a child grows older. Remembered uncertainty about an implement should remain uncertainty. It is more useful than combining both accounts into an invented complete folktale. A future entry expansion could compare their family transmission with a documented Korean-language performance, identifying which details belong to the speaker and which to a later interpretation. Lochan’s Wrestling With a Goblin follows a man home from the market through a mountain pass. He accepts the challenge, wins at daybreak and uses a belt to fasten the opponent to a tree. On returning the next day, he finds broomsticks and flails. Her illustrated article is a contemporary honorary reporter’s adaptation, not a newly collected encounter or a critical edition of every Korean wrestling tale. [8]

Landscape & Associations

In the National Folk Museum’s exhibition explanation, people seek a view over sea or mudflats on the year’s last night and interpret a Dokkaebi light as a promising place for a catch. The digital presentation joins light, tidal water and fish to express that hope. The museum does not present a captured light-source or a scientific identification. Its account supports a particular coastal association, while leaving the origin of the perceived lights and the full variety of local customs outside this short description. [5]

Lochan’s market-goer confronts an opponent in a mountain pass. The museum’s fishermen interpret distant light over tidal ground without seeing a body. One encounter becomes a physical contest; the other concerns signs read through the work of fishing. [8][5]

Variants & Kindred Beings

Lee Jong-ho’s comparative essay records variation in audible and visible appearances and associates Dokkaebi with objects people use. It also quotes a Jeju description of a comically dressed figure, demonstrating that visual character can be local and narrative. The essay’s broad national-origin claims are not adopted. Its useful contribution here is the reminder that household tools, paths, clothing and sounds can organize an encounter without producing one universally recognizable monster body. The earlier authorities quoted inside it remain mediated sources. [4]

Four related routes are Oni for a separate Japanese tradition and the risks of careless visual substitution; Brownie for unexpected work and exchange; Domovoi for a culturally distinct relationship with domestic fortune; and Kitsune for another separately attributed body of transformation narratives. These links invite comparison of behaviour and representation rather than a shared lineage. Comparing the entries should make their differences easier to notice, especially the contrast between an animal-associated figure, a domestic resident and a being encountered through games or objects.

Meaning & Belief

Grace Kim interprets her interviews through moral instruction, communal values and Korean American identity. Her paper acknowledges difficulties in interviewing family members across language and generational differences before selecting bilingual informants. This is a situated research process, not permission to claim one philosophy for an entire people. The interviews can show how an individual remembers stories affecting conduct; the author’s larger claims about Confucianism and national character require separate assessment and are not treated here as established universal explanations. A grandparent’s warning changes with a child’s age, while local rites address livelihood or illness. Games can entertain and teach caution; playful stories and serious practices coexist without one moral. [3][2]

Later Retellings & Reception

Wonyoung Lee’s 2018 research abstract examines Dokkaebi-themed trails and cultural attractions at Gokseong and Mount Hanwoo in Uiryeong. It describes local tales being adapted for performances, sculptures and nature experiences, and questions insufficiently disclosed borrowing from another region. The underlying full article was not consulted, so this entry reports the published abstract’s subject and concern only. The examples are evidence of modern cultural adaptation, not direct evidence for an old encounter or an endorsement of a current attraction. [7]

The Site of Dokkaebi programme schedules a 12 April 2024 museum performance led by Yoo Seong-yeol of the Pyeongtaek Nongak Preservation Association. A Dokkaebi and guardian lion rebuke villagers seeking a harvest only for themselves. The villagers respond through jokes, drumming and plate-spinning; the antagonists join the dance, and the finale brings performers and audience together. This announced sequence makes reconciliation a performed action. The consulted programme records the makers’ plan, not a witnessed performance or proof that the same ending belongs to every regional tale. [9]

Evidence & Open Questions

The consulted record supports Korean narrative variation, attributed regional functions and later debates about representation. It does not verify a physical creature or settle every contested visual history. Four separately authored substantive studies were read: Im Dong-kwon’s reference entry, Kim Jong-dae’s essay, Lee Jong-ho’s essay and Grace Kim’s scoped research paper. The last includes primary interviews but is an undergraduate study. Two scholarly abstracts, museum materials and Lochan’s retelling supplement that base without becoming full articles, witnessed performances or field observations. [1][2][4][3][6][7]

The next substantive checks are Korean-language comparison with the cited early texts, assessment of visual evidence in the complete horns study, and consultation with regional ritual and folklore expertise. Those checks may change how particular appearances and object associations are interpreted. The incomplete access trail remains visible rather than concealed behind a large bibliography or an unsupported statement that one design is authentic.
