Also recorded as Golem of Prague, Der Golem
The Golem connects creation, language and responsibility in Jewish texts and later art. The celebrated Prague defender is one later legend within a wider background of rabbinic creation and mystical interpretation. [2][3][5]

Psalm 139:16 contains the Hebrew form golmi. Mechon-Mamre’s parallel English text renders it as the speaker’s unformed substance, within a meditation on being made and known by God. The surrounding verses concern the body’s formation, not an independent clay servant walking through Prague. That contextual difference matters: a word’s scriptural appearance is not automatically the earliest version of a later legend. The passage provides a linguistic and religious background whose meaning should remain visible beside subsequent uses of the name. [1]
The profile follows Jewish texts and their reception: the scriptural word, a rabbinic created man, mystical creation and later Prague service legends. These are related subjects whose different purposes remain visible; animated statues from unrelated traditions are not folded into this name.
Peter Schäfer’s Golem-Variationen explains the creative role of Hebrew letters through a discussion of Mark Podwal’s drawings. His account connects the Book of Creation with numbers, alphabetic combinations and the divine name. The drawings make those ideas visible through letters emerging from books and Prague’s Hebrew clock. The essay is a situated scholarly interpretation of Jewish tradition and modern art. It is not an instruction issued by this file, nor proof that the depicted creative act can be performed. [4]
Schäfer’s Prague example turns architecture into writing. The Jewish town hall has a Roman-numeral clock above a Hebrew-letter clock; the latter’s hands move counterclockwise. In Podwal’s The Dream of Rabbi Loew, letters leave the clock and form the protector. The museum dates this ink drawing to 1982 and identifies it among Podwal’s illustrations for Elie Wiesel’s Golem. A familiar civic object becomes part of an artist’s imaginative account of creation. [4]
Kieval’s YIVO account identifies nineteenth-century Prague print stages: Auerbach’s Spinoza (1837), Klutschak (1841) and Weisel’s Sipurim contribution (1847). He separates Maharal’s death in 1609 from these literary records and rejects Rosenberg’s 1909 claimed old manuscript as fabricated. The novels and collections themselves were not separately read here. [3]
The purported manuscript cannot establish an earlier record; its publication documents later circulation. [3]
The Jewish Museum in New York preserves Robert Wilson and Moidele Bickel’s The Golem, dated 1987: a life-size papier-mâché form made from Chinese and Japanese newspapers, glue and a metal support. In Wilson’s theatre production it served as sculpture, costume and set design. An actor wore the stiff hat-and-coat exterior, which another character opened to reveal the actor within, wearing corresponding real clothing. The object consequently gives the Golem a layered appearance rather than a bare clay body. It is evidence of a specific modern performance design. [9]
The finished original folio selects a clay-helper interpretation of the later Prague legend. Its basis is the public Jewish museum interpretation and Kieval’s account of the legend’s literary history, rather than a claim to show a historical body. Clay texture and a human outline express that selection without reproducing a film costume, a historic likeness or a museum artist’s design. No sacred writing or ritual method is reproduced. The image remains an artistic response to that selected legend. [3][8]
Emily D. Bilski’s introduction to the Jewish Museum Berlin catalogue’s mysticism chapter distinguishes the process of creating a Golem from the practical use of a servant. In the mystical traditions she discusses, creation seeks closeness to God and spiritual fulfilment; a creation can be made lifeless again immediately. Her account describes transmitted manuscript material and the significance of Hebrew letter combinations. It does not reduce the act to a reusable spell chart or imply that physical labour is its original purpose. [5]
Mystical creation and practical service pose different questions: the maker’s aspiration and the made being’s work. [5]
Sanhedrin 65b gives a brief, consequential episode. Rava creates a man and sends him to Rabbi Zeira, who addresses him but receives no reply. Zeira recognises the creation and tells it to return to dust. The William Davidson/Steinsaltz English presentation adds explanatory language, including Golem, around the compact underlying statement. The adjacent passage also describes sages studying the Book of Creation and producing a calf. This is rabbinic textual material about creation and its limits, not an encounter report about the Prague attic. [2]
The brevity leaves important matters unspecified. This passage does not provide a portrait, a name for the created individual, a persecution plot or a rampage. Those absences should not be filled with details borrowed from a later legend. Silence itself carries the action: attempted conversation reveals a difference, and the creation is returned to its material origin. A restrained retelling can make that sequence intelligible without adding emotions or motives the consulted passage does not state. The reader should also be able to distinguish translation from explanatory expansion.
The Jewish Museum in Prague’s public retelling attaches clay to the Vltava’s banks and the Golem’s final resting place to the Old-New Synagogue attic. It presents sacred words or a written divine name as alternative means of animation and identifies the creature as a legendary protector. These are the museum’s narrative associations. Its explicit answer to whether the Golem was real says there is no historical proof. A riverbank and a synagogue can be places of memory without becoming a documented creation site or an accessible specimen repository. [8]
Wilson’s Berlin stage supplies a different constructed setting. The museum describes Death, Destruction, and Detroit II as a four-hour Kafka-based production distributed across nine stages. Humans initially guide the Golem’s movements with sticks. Its commentary reads this manipulation through robots, choice and free will. The setting is therefore an authored theatre space where control becomes visible, rather than a reconstruction of the Prague attic. The production itself was not watched for this entry. [9]
The historical Jewish Encyclopedia entry includes more than the Prague narrative. Its medieval and later sections discuss an attributed servant of Solomon ibn Gabirol, Elijah of Chelm’s creation, and a story about a Golem used for winter heating. It also records a question about whether a Golem could count toward a prayer quorum. Those accounts bring service, growth, error and status into different settings. The encyclopedia is itself an older synthesis, with inherited assumptions and comparisons that require later scholarship. Its cited responsa and stories were not independently consulted here. [7]
The Jinn file offers a reading comparison about a religious category whose popular fantasy uses can obscure its setting. Brownie and Domovoi offer comparisons about household service and reciprocal obligation, while Oni permits comparison of a broad term with particular illustrated forms. These four links do not assert common origin, identical belief or equal religious status. They invite the reader to notice how much is lost when a being is classified only by the work it performs or by a frightening image.
In Golem, Sprache, Dada, Emily D. Bilski reads a collaborative work by Rimma Gerlovina, Mark Berghash and Valeriy Gerlovin. Photographed body parts bearing Hebrew letters form a grid that permits several readings: truth and death, human and blood, alongside a French wordplay. The artists’ mixed body and rearrangeable writing make viewers participants in interpretation. This is a specific modern work exploring language and embodiment. It should not be mistaken for a diagram of a traditional rite or a definitive statement about what a Golem must look like. [6]
Language in this example does more than issue an order to a servant. Reading helps assemble meaning, and changing an arrangement changes what can be understood. The comparison illuminates the Golem’s value for artists without replacing its Jewish context with a universal slogan about technology. A responsible adaptation can state whose work it follows and what it adds. It can also ask whether the made being has become only an instrument, and whether the maker’s intended purpose exhausts the meaning of what has been created. [6]
Anna-Carolin Augustin’s Jewish Museum Berlin feature distinguishes Gustav Meyrink’s spectral Prague figure from Paul Wegener’s cinema versions of 1915, 1917 and 1920. It attributes a lasting visual influence to Wegener’s own appearance as the Golem. The feature also identifies antisemitic stereotypes in Meyrink’s descriptions and their illustration. Those outside adaptations are consequential reception history; their imagery should not silently become a neutral portrait of Jewish tradition. The 1920 film’s constructed atmosphere belongs to filmmaking, not to recovered sixteenth-century architecture. [10]
The museum’s 2016 exhibition announcement broadens the field to contemporary art, creative processes and political or scientific metaphors that can escape control. It includes several artists and a theatre production, demonstrating the motif’s continuing range. This institutional presentation is itself a modern framing. Its relevance here is that reception can transform the Golem into a question about the maker’s responsibility. That framing does not authenticate a creature, and it does not authorise every later use of the term to speak for Judaism. [11]
The consulted works establish scriptural language, a rabbinic creation episode, later legend history and modern interpretation. Their questions overlap without becoming interchangeable. A museum’s public legend page and a scholar’s reconstruction of literary transmission can differ in emphasis. Where the page evokes centuries of oral circulation, the dated history must still be checked through traceable records. The present manuscript uses the public retelling for its stated motifs and Kieval for the chronology he examines; it does not merge their levels of certainty into one supposedly documented biography.
Further work should consult Hebrew scholarship and the underlying medieval commentaries, compare named nineteenth-century versions, and review how translation marks explanatory additions. The Dekel/Gurley paper and Trachtenberg’s relevant chapter were located but not successfully accessed as underlying text, so neither is claimed as a consulted work. The Golem can sustain a luminous fantasy treatment while the writing keeps its Jewish contexts explicit and its historical claims modest, inspectable and separate from art.
Read Psalm 139 and Sanhedrin 65b as distinct textual starting points. Kieval supplies a bounded history of the Prague literary attribution; the older Jewish Encyclopedia is useful as a historical synthesis requiring comparison. The Prague page supplies a public retelling. Bilski, Schäfer and Augustin are named contemporary interpreters, including separately authored essays from one shared exhibition catalogue. The Wilson object record and exhibition announcement document reception. No underlying mystical manuscript, film screening or claimed attic remains were inspected.
