Mila'sExotic Plants & CuriositiesA living collection by Luminary OdditiesThe Hodag is a fantastical North American lumber-camp beast, variously imagined with a shovel-like snout, horns or a spiny tail.
Also recorded as Rhinelander Hodag
The Hodag could uproot a tree, emerge from an ox’s ashes or weep tears that a lemon would dissolve. In Rhinelander it also became a creature people paid to see—and kept coming to see after learning how the exhibition beast had been made. [1][2][3][4]

The Hodag belongs to the imaginative forests of lumber-camp storytelling, where a creature can be introduced with complete confidence and an increasingly impossible explanation. Its Rhinelander history also includes a deliberately constructed exhibition beast. These strands make it especially revealing: the monster could exist as a told joke, a staged discovery and a community emblem without those forms requiring the same sort of belief. Its survival after the deception was admitted is part of the story. [4][1][2]
There is no single anatomy behind the name. William T. Cox chooses a slow, rhinoceros-like animal with a shovel-shaped growth on its nose. Lake Shore Kearney gives a powerful spiny creature a spectacular origin and capture. Henry H. Tryon describes an ugly, weeping beast vulnerable to lemons. The disagreement is productive: each writer shapes a creature fitted to a particular joke, narrative or mock account of natural history. [1][2][3]
Cox locates competing descriptions among woodsmen in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Kearney begins in a northwoods landscape of pines, streams and working oxen. The creature's surroundings are consequently populated by the tools, materials and labour of forest work. A tree is not just scenery: it can carry food, provide pitch, conceal a trap or represent the enormous burden that a draught animal has had to move. [1][2]
Rhinelander gives this mobile camp creature a more specific public home. Wisconsin Historical Society's account identifies Eugene Shepard's 1893 illustrated newspaper claim and the 1896 fair exhibition. The history is not an account of an unknown species being scientifically established. It is an account of how local inventiveness brought a familiar tall-tale name into an event that people could attend and discuss, and a town could continue to recognise. [4]
The Historical Society notes that the name appeared in print before Shepard's performance and that earlier newspapers carried stories about Hodag promoters. Shepard did not create every use of the word. His distinctive achievement was to make a supposedly captured creature visible, though only under controlled conditions. The difference between inventing a tradition from nothing and giving an existing name a new theatrical form matters to the creature's history. [4][5]
For the 1896 display, Shepard and Luke Kearney made a beast from wood, hide and horns. Darkness, curtains, movement and frightening noises helped make the short viewing persuasive. The exhibition therefore supplied more than a sculpture: it supplied conditions under which a sculpture could be experienced as a difficult and dangerous animal. That staged uncertainty is as important to the history as the shape of the object itself. [4][5]
Cox's selected portrait is deliberately cumbersome. A large bony shovel obscures the animal's sight so that it looks upward; its hairless skin has mottled, striped and checked patterns suggestive of woodsmen's clothing. Its slow movement complements the cumbersome head. The physical features are not random ornaments: they prepare the reader for the improbable explanation of how a creature with such limited vision obtains its food. [1]
Kearney’s monster has a much more threatening silhouette: a broad horned forehead, shaggy hair, sharp teeth, massive short legs, curved claws and a long spined tail ending like a spear. Glowing green eyes and a terrible smell announce its presence. The compact, bristling body gives the trap episode a formidable pursuer. It also differs conspicuously from Cox’s lumbering shovel-nosed animal; the shared name holds together competing tall-tale portraits, not one measured specimen. [2]
Cox's Hodag solves the problem of a porcupine above it by digging at the tree's roots until the tree falls. It then eats the displaced animal. In autumn it coats itself with pitch and rolls in fallen leaves, forming its own winter covering. This is practical woodcraft pushed into mock zoology: tools become bodily adaptations, and familiar forest materials become an extravagant animal's equipment. [1]
Tryon's account turns ugliness into a more intimate joke. The Hodag knows how upsetting it looks and weeps; its crystallised tears are mistaken for amber, then dissolve after contact with a drink containing lemon. Citrus also serves as protection against the creature. The account makes a dangerous beast vulnerable to an ordinary domestic ingredient, while the narrator's supposed specimen passes briefly into jewellery and then disappears. [3]
Kearney's origin begins with the working ox. The patient animal hauls logs while its drivers prod and curse it. After death, a long fire is said to be needed to burn away the profanity accumulated during its hard life. At the end of the seventh year, the Hodag emerges from the ashes. This is a comic transformation, but its starting point is a recognisable imbalance between exhausted labour and the people who demand it. [2]
Kearney intensifies the contrast by presenting an ox as bait for the new monster. A concealed pit is prepared, and an extraordinarily capable runner leads the bait along a trail. At the crucial moment the leader guides the ox around the opening; the charging Hodag falls through its covering. The ox receives rest and food afterwards. The creature born from the abused animal is captured through another animal's carefully managed danger. [2]
The landscapes in these accounts remain active participants. Cox's porcupine waits in the branches, while roots give the Hodag something to undermine. Pitch and fallen leaves turn a seasonal forest into a wardrobe. In Kearney, branches and grass disguise the trap, and a cleared route allows bait and pursuer to move towards it. The woods supply both the problem and the solution, making the stories specific to a working environment. [1][2]
The exhibition moves this imaginative forest into a constrained viewing space. A curtain and dim light replace the trees as ways of preventing an unobstructed view. The transition is revealing: a narrated glimpse becomes an arranged glimpse, and an audience can experience the suspense together. The creature's apparent difficulty of approach helps explain why not seeing it clearly could be incorporated into the performance instead of exposing the performance at once. [4][5]
Cox acknowledges horns-and-spines descriptions before choosing his own shovel-nosed animal. That admission makes the selected version one competing account, even while his natural-history voice calls it the most authentic. Tryon's mock Latin name and confident reference to capture give another portrait the language of classification. The writers are playing with authoritative presentation; the headings do not establish biological specimens or the priority of one anatomy. [1][3]
Kearney's story adds extravagant prehistoric speculation and an alleged ancient Egyptian parchment translated by a local reporter. Those assertions belong to the tale's escalating comedy, not to palaeontology or Egyptian history. Reading them alongside the mock zoological portraits clarifies the genre's method: a familiar form of explanation is imitated until its excessive confidence becomes part of the entertainment. The claim to authenticity is itself one of the story's performed effects. [2]
The ox origin gives the Hodag an unusual emotional position. It is terrifying when it emerges, yet the preceding narrative has invited attention to the animal's difficult life. Tryon's tears create a different sympathy, immediately entangled with absurdity. These portraits do more than make a forest dangerous: they make a monster complain, suffer or carry the consequences of human behaviour. Their comedy does not depend on the creature being uniformly cruel. [2][3]
The exhibition's later popularity shows a different relationship between affection and belief. The Historical Society records that people continued to want to see the Hodag after Shepard admitted the deception. Knowing how it was made did not erase its appeal. The discovery could become a shared account of local cleverness, and the audience could appreciate the performance without needing the original claim of a newly captured animal to remain true. [4]
Hodag Press's local history presents the exhibition as a promotional project connected with Rhinelander's future beyond lumbering. That is the account's interpretation of the creature's civic role, not proof that one attraction caused the town's economic survival. Its useful point is narrower: the monster could draw attention to a community as well as to its maker. The setting of a public fair linked entertainment with a place asking to be noticed. [5]
The Historical Society’s museum teaching material presents the Hodag as a continuing mascot whose images appear around the town. This public afterlife changes the creature’s function again. A frightening discovery becomes something one can recognise with pleasure. The name can recall both an impossible forest animal and the ingenuity of a known exhibition. Its local value survives the loss of the original claim, allowing affection for the creature and knowledge of the fabrication to coexist. [4]
The supported history distinguishes a fabricated exhibition from a disputed animal report. The known construction is a substantive explanation of Shepard's displayed creature; it does not tell us precisely when every earlier woodsman first used the name. Similarly, Cox, Kearney and Tryon preserve authored portraits whose confident narration is part of the performance. Their text supports analysis of stories, not the existence of the animals they describe. [4][1][2][3]
The selected sources do not establish the Hodag as an Indigenous spirit being. Museum teaching material mentions a possible connection, but a general suggestion cannot identify a particular community's account or licence a merger with its sacred traditions. This entry therefore follows the documented lumber-story and exhibition history. Its most distinctive uncertainty concerns how versions of a popular joke travelled and changed, not whether the known wooden exhibit secretly concealed an undiscovered species. [4][1][2]
Cox's complete Hodag account, Kearney's complete opening Hodag narrative and Tryon's short Hodag portrait were read as separate authored versions. Wisconsin Historical Society's educational and historical accounts supply the exhibition history, and Hodag Press supplies a local interpretation. Repeated museum wording is treated as one source chain. Unconsulted books named by these pages are not added as independent readings. [1][2][3][4][5]
