A field guide to the extraordinary
Jiangshi
Chinese animated-corpse literature · Qing strange-tale collections · Hong Kong supernatural comedy and horror
Also recorded as Jiāngshī, 僵屍, 僵尸
Jiangshi refers here to animated or uncanny corpses in Chinese literary and later screen traditions. The consulted older tales describe different bodies, movements and situations. Their dead are not all blood-drinking men in an official costume, and the familiar cinematic image needs its own attribution. [2][1][4]
