Also recorded as Gumiho, Nine-tailed fox
A familiar face conceals another identity. Korean fox records preserve distinct narratives, performances and interpretations. [7][4][6]

Christine Jean Hong identifies the kumiho as the nine-tailed fox in her discussion of Korean fox lore. This entry retains Gumiho as an alternative romanisation. Its historical sources also contain fox transformations without specifying nine tails, so the broader material is identified as fox lore rather than silently converted into one uniform kumiho description. A creature name can organise a file without erasing differences among the records gathered around it. [7]
The title has the clarity of a bestiary name, yet the face in a story may remain unclear until a late revelation. That delay is part of the enchantment. A reader who knows the category beforehand can still attend to what the characters know, what they suspect and what they misread. The file therefore follows the movement of recognition alongside the creature portrait. It asks how a fox becomes identifiable within a particular telling, rather than merely listing a finished disguise.
Johnson describes threatening transformations in his Korean examples while acknowledging limited sources in Western languages. That scope cannot establish every Korean teller’s understanding or make Korean, Chinese and Japanese fox figures interchangeable. [5]
The Academy of Korean Studies preserves another context: a fox-bead telling recorded on 26 February 2010 in Gwangyang, South Jeolla. Its full text identifies an office meeting room, three listeners and five researchers. The teller follows another participant’s related story. The performance date records this particular gathering, not the origin of the motif. Header and internal teller credits conflict, so no individual name is selected without qualification. [2]
A Story of the Fox appears in the 1913 English collection translated by James S. Gale from Im Bang and Yi Ryuk. The consulted story is credited to Im Bang. It concerns Yi Kwai meeting an unfamiliar woman while studying late in an official residence. The text’s narrative and the translator’s introductory explanation are kept distinct; the English edition is a historical literary witness, not a contemporary eyewitness deposition. [4]
The age of a printed witness does not make every event within it a documented occurrence. It does make the wording and framing worth studying. Translation introduces another voice, particularly when an editor explains supernatural beings to readers who may know little of the source culture. Attending to that voice helps the file avoid adopting old generalisations as its own. A historic text can remain vivid while the catalogue clearly identifies whose rendering the reader is encountering.
The folio may choose a fox with nine luminous tails beside an ambiguous human silhouette. It should identify this as an original modern interpretation, rather than an image recovered from a historical source. The tails can establish the catalogue subject visually without becoming a claim that every consulted Korean fox story describes them. Suggestion is more faithful to the file’s uncertainty than a pretend anatomical plate with measurements and a verified transformation sequence.
The Korean encyclopedia entry on wonder-working treasures describes a fox or serpent meeting a pupil or young man at a secluded pass and exchanging a bead through their mouths. Its note identifies a transformed beautiful woman as a gumiho, but the main comparison also includes a serpent. The bead motif therefore overlaps this file without being a diagnostic nine-tail description. The synopsis is a scholarly entry based on collected tales, not a transcript of every performance it summarises. [1]
SP’s collected Fox Sister version makes the sister seek another human liver in order to become human. That condition belongs to this performance; it is not treated as a universal number or method for every kumiho tale. The same account associates the cattle deaths with the full moon. Its specific sequence is preserved without turning a narrator’s motif into a demonstrated lunar influence or a general rule of supernatural biology. [6]
In the encyclopedia’s account, a teacher tells the pupil to swallow the bead and look toward heaven. The outcome varies: looking only at earth produces knowledge of the land, while looking at earth and sky can confer broader learning. Place and famous-person legends can attach to the episode. This is a narrated distribution of knowledge, not an instruction that swallowing an object provides wisdom. Its changing outcomes should not be replaced by a single rule imported from a screen adaptation. [1]
In Im Bang’s story, Yi Kwai suspects that the silent visitor is supernatural, seizes her and calls for help. She bites his neck, escapes and is not seen again. The narrative presents his identification as correct, but the file does not treat the scene as an independently authenticated attack. It offers a literary example of uncertain company and recognition, with no nine-tail description imposed on the visitor. [4]
There is an important difference between the narrator’s certainty and the evidence available outside a story. Within a tale, a revelation may settle what a visitor truly is. Outside it, an editor must identify the document and its genre. That distinction lets the reader enter the suspense without being asked to mistake literary resolution for forensic proof. The power of the scene lies in the sudden change of a quiet meeting, not in a reconstructed case file that the consulted record cannot supply.
Johnson summarises Zong’s tale of a man pursued after offending a roadside bone and later meeting a fox woman. Zong’s original edition was not read here; the plot is mediated through Johnson. [5]
In the Gwangyang transcript, listeners help locate the protagonist’s home across from their community. A mountain-pass route to a village school gives the meeting a local itinerary. The investigator also interrupts over the teller’s modern word kiss, and the teller adjusts the phrasing. Such exchanges are part of the saved text, rather than noise removed to simulate an untouched ancient tale. The transcript gives neither nine tails nor a recorded specimen; the fox-bead title and narrated learning outcome remain its own context. [2]
The Fox Sister performance preserved by USC begins with a father wishing for a daughter even if she is a fox. His sons discover the sister killing cattle, but he rejects their account. The returned family member later becomes dangerous within the home. The informant links her recollection to a possible children’s book and more recent online reading. This documents one 2016 telling, rather than a representative survey or an unchanged ancient text. [6]
The neighbouring Huli Jing and Kitsune files invite comparison of fox transformations, while preserving each tradition’s own histories. Selkie offers a different comparison: another changed body and another intimate relationship. None of those links establishes ancestry or interchangeable powers. The most useful comparative question is often smaller: what does a household do when a person’s identity becomes doubtful? Different tales may answer that question through welcome, suspicion, violence or loss, and their differences are worth keeping.
Hong’s 2012 conference paper connects fox imagery with gendered expectations and the experiences of women she interviewed in Korean American communities. Her discussion of yuh-woo considers language used about women, not just remembered tales. This is a situated argument with pseudonymised participants; it is not a consensus statement for Korean people or a licence to apply a supernatural accusation to a real woman. [7]
A frightening female figure can be read critically without making fear itself the reader’s final verdict. Who describes her, who desires her, and who decides that she belongs outside the human circle? Such questions give the tale more room than a simple warning that beauty conceals evil. They also protect the distinction between examining a stereotype and repeating it. The bestiary’s wonder should come from narrative complexity, not from treating an actual person’s independence as evidence of monstrosity.
Sung-Ae Lee’s 2011 adaptation study compares picture books, films and television dramas. She finds that the 1997 and 2005 Fox-Sister picture books retain a brother-centred perspective, while later screen works increasingly align viewers with the fox. Her analysis of Park Hun-Soo’s Gumiho from 1994 places a fox-woman’s wish to become human beside greed and exclusion in human society. These are Lee’s readings of particular productions, not historical claims about every Korean narrator or direct viewing records made for this edition. [3]
Lee distinguishes different uses of sympathy. Some adult adaptations give the fox moral conflict while preserving a fatal sacrifice; her discussion of family-oriented works instead associates fox otherness with contemporary social outsiders. Changing the viewpoint therefore need not produce the same ending or politics. The consulted opening body identifies that argument and its selected examples. The films, complete television series and picture books themselves were not watched or read here, and their invented powers are not backdated into the traditional profile. [3]
The source trail supports a literary and folkloric file: a translated historical story, scoped comparative scholarship, a collected contemporary telling, and an authored gender interpretation. These works establish representations and interpretations. They do not establish an animal with nine tails, a verified change of body, or a medical explanation for historical reports. The distinction is essential because an elaborate narrative can contain firm internal rules while remaining a narrative record.
Further research should consult Korean-language tale collections and studies with stable performance or manuscript context. It should also examine variation beyond the threatening fox portraits selected here. The present draft has enough consulted material to make those questions concrete, while fuller source adequacy remains under review. No existence percentage is attached to the being. The reader receives a visible trail of texts, an invitation to compare them and a clear account of the doors this research has not yet opened.
Seven separately produced works were consulted within stated scopes. Im Bang is read through Gale’s 1913 translation; Johnson’s Korean discussion is scoped and mediated; USC preserves SP’s short performance and collector commentary; Hong’s complete conference paper supplies a situated interpretive lens. Lee’s 2011 adaptation article was subsequently accessed through its university repository; printed pp.135–141 were read, with the remainder unconsulted. AKS’s scholarly bead synopsis and a Gwangyang oral transcript add distinct Korean-language contexts. Exact access limits are in the local ledger.
