Names & Creature Profile

Mélusine is a named fairy woman, not a general species of mermaid. This article follows selected episodes of Jean d’Arras’s romance while keeping other versions visible as separate literary witnesses. Melusina is a spelling found in the wider tradition, but a change of spelling does not guarantee that every later story preserves the same plot. Her family, marriage pact and place as a founder are as important to her identity as the spectacular body revealed in the bath. [1]

The reader encounters a person whose public life and concealed condition coexist. She can offer counsel, recognise political danger and shape a dynasty, yet she is unable to free herself from the sentence attached to her Saturdays. Calling her simply a seductress or a monster misses that tension. The romance gives her a voice that explains what secrecy means, what the marriage could have allowed, and what the betrayal has taken away. [1]

Homeland & Tradition

Jean’s prologue places the work under the patronage of Jean, duke of Berry, and invokes chronicles, testimony and divine mysteries as grounds for telling it. The narrator’s insistence on truth belongs to the romance’s own authority-making. It is not equivalent to a modern historical demonstration. The story presents Lusignan’s founder as worthy of a great lineage, weaving supernatural ancestry into claims about place, inheritance and a patron’s possession of a fortress. [1]

The consulted narrative also speaks in a Christian idiom. Mélusine desires a natural lifespan, the sacraments and eventual burial in the church of Notre-Dame at Lusignan. Her unusual body is therefore not treated as a simple declaration that she stands outside Christianity. The deepest loss she describes is exclusion from the ordinary ending she hoped to share with human life: death, burial and remembrance in the community she has helped establish. [1]

Historical Record

The accessible French text is Charles Brunet’s 1854 edition, which says it reproduces the 1478 printed version with corrections, punctuation and accents. Those editorial interventions stand between the modern reader and medieval wording. Zeldenrust places Jean’s prose around 1393 and Coudrette’s verse at the beginning of the fifteenth century, then follows their different routes into other languages. A romance’s translation history cannot be reduced to a single unchanged legend passing from book to book. [1][3]

Appearance & Signs

In the bath episode, Raymondin drills a small opening with his sword and sees Mélusine combing her hair. Below the navel she has a large serpent tail that disturbs the water. The passage gives the room and bath conspicuous solidity, making the impossible form part of a private domestic space. It does not describe a double fish tail. Later, when she leaves, the narrative presents a great flying serpent; these are successive forms at different moments. [1]

The water stirred by the tail gives Raymondin an unmistakable sign of the secret he has sworn not to investigate. Mélusine is not performing a transformation for him; he has made an opening into a room from which his promise excludes him. Her ordinary gesture of combing her hair and the extraordinary movement below it occupy the same private moment. The spectacle is inseparable from the way it is seen: discovery begins as a breach of trust. [1]

Nature & Powers

Pressine’s sentence follows Mélusine and her sisters’ imprisonment of their father. A marriage that keeps the required secrecy offers Mélusine the possibility of a natural human death; revelation returns her to prolonged punishment. The transformation thus has a narrative cause and conditions. It is not a freely chosen disguise she can put aside whenever convenient. The power to build and protect a lineage exists beside a constraint that prosperity cannot remove. [1]

The farewell gives her gifts and continuing obligations as well as anguish. She hands Raymondin protective rings, speaks about the children’s future and says she will still aid him in need. Yet her instructions also contain the terrible demand that their violent son Horrible be killed to avert greater destruction. The romance’s founder is neither an uncomplicated victim nor an uncomplicated menace. Care, authority and frightening dynastic calculation remain entangled in her final decisions. [1]

Tales & Encounters

Raymondin’s brother supplies the suspicion that drives him to the chamber door. After seeing the tail, Raymondin does not immediately denounce his wife. He regrets breaking his oath, seals the opening and angrily dismisses the brother whose insinuations brought him there. This first betrayal is still concealed. Its immediate effect is shame and fear within Raymondin, which the story distinguishes from the later public act that makes reconciliation impossible. [1]

That later act follows news that Geoffroy has burned the abbey at Maillezais with his brother and the monks inside. Raymondin’s grief turns against Mélusine, and before others he calls her a serpent and attacks the legitimacy of her children. She explains that she could have forgiven the secret breach, but the exposed condition now ends her human future. The lovers embrace and collapse in anguish; forgiveness of the person cannot undo the consequence of what has been spoken. [1]

Landscape & Associations

Mélusine’s departure is measured against what she is leaving. Gardens, windows, the fortress and the people who have served her surround the farewell. Her airborne circuit and cries turn architecture into the outline of a loss. The narrative makes the place more than a backdrop: the founder’s body passes from the domestic chamber into the landscape that preserves her name and the authority of her descendants. [1]

The concluding narrator reports appearances around Lusignan and associates the serpent with changes of lordship and deaths within the lineage. Such passages support a history of how the romance claims continuity between family and fortress. They do not verify that any apparition occurred. What remains compelling is the shift in relationship: a woman who once gave orders within a household becomes a presence seen at its margins, returning when the house faces a consequential change. Variants & Kindred Beings

Zeldenrust’s introduction stresses that the French branches and their translations do not handle every episode identically. Their different treatment of the sisters and later appearances warns against constructing one composite plot and calling it the original. This article’s detailed bath and farewell follow the consulted Jean text. Coudrette’s complete verse romance, its translators and other local Mélusine stories remain distinct reading paths, not extra primary works silently claimed as read. [3]

The related shelves offer comparisons at several distances. Selkie concerns a marriage and a concealed other form; Mermaid helps distinguish a named serpent-tailed founder from a broad aquatic figure; European dragon offers an animal shape also used in her reception; Púca compares changing forms in a different storytelling setting. None establishes kinship. Mélusine’s particular strength is the way one altered body carries marriage, ancestry and building into the same story.

Meaning & Belief

Jan Shaw reads the central marriage as an exchange that requires active participation from both partners. Her account draws attention to the promise of privacy alongside the honour and prosperity Mélusine supplies. This helps explain why Raymondin’s looking is an action with consequences, not a neutral moment of discovery. The betrayal changes the relationship before the public accusation changes the household’s future. [2]

The romance makes the accusation especially destructive because it turns a condition into a judgement of the whole person. Raymondin knows the woman who has counselled him and shared his life, but anger lets him speak as if the serpent explains everything. A contemporary reading can recognise that reduction without pretending the story offers a modern doctrine of equality. Its Christian punishment, aristocratic lineage and violent treatment of a child remain part of the same narrative. [1]

Later Retellings & Reception

The BnF’s Fantasy caption presents Mélusine as an ambivalent medieval figure: mother and builder, but also a subject of fears about female and animal nature. Its modern examples show how later fantasy can value a draconic association differently. That is a reception argument, not proof that all medieval audiences or all modern readers understood her in one way. The older story supplies conflicting qualities that new tellings can emphasise differently. [4]

Jean’s farewell refuses to let the revealed serpent erase the woman who has lived at Lusignan. Mélusine still names those she cares for, gives rings and speaks about the children’s future. The change of body does not end her concern for the household. Her departure instead separates the continuing founder from the human life and burial she had hoped for. The romance’s marvellous ancestry carries loss within the very lineage it seeks to honour. [1]

Evidence & Open Questions

The manuscript and print record supports a long literary history, while the supernatural ancestry and appearances remain claims inside that history. Jean’s narrator invokes testimony and the limits of human understanding; those rhetorical supports should be analysed as part of his storytelling. They cannot serve as independent confirmation that a serpent-woman founded a family or that an apparition predicted a death. [1]

The remaining questions concern versions and interpretation more than anatomy. Which elements belong to a particular redaction? How do translation, illustration and patronage alter the balance between feared creature and valued founder? The selected passages allow a substantial reading of the marriage and departure, but not a full account of every son’s adventure or every regional tradition. Mélusine’s unresolved character is meaningful because the romance gives her several consequential roles, not because a missing fact must be filled with another invented power. [1]
