Names & Creature Profile

Pegasus, also written Pegasos, is the winged horse whose partnership with Bellerophon gives flight a heroic purpose. In Odilon Redon’s Pegasus and Bellerophon, dated about 1888, the horse towers over the man. The Metropolitan Museum describes wings made restless by traces of revision and light worked into charcoal darkness. The image gives the creature a presence that exceeds the rider: even in a story of capture, Pegasus can remain the greater visual force. [11]

Paul Manship’s Bellerophon and Pegasus, a small sculpture of 1930, approaches the partnership through physical strain. Its male figure works to steady a winged horse with powerful flanks. The museum identifies bronze, gilding and lapis lazuli among its materials. Here the impossible horse meets the familiar effort of holding a spirited animal; its wings do not remove the resistance in its body. That tension makes mastery an action, not a condition taken for granted. [12]

Homeland & Tradition

Corinth gives Pegasus a civic setting. A silver stater in the British Museum, dated 555–515 BCE, shows a bridled Pegasus walking to the left, its wing curled above its body. The animal appears as a compact public image, small enough to circulate in a hand. Its presence on a coin documents the importance of the winged horse to Corinthian imagery; it is not a traveller’s report of encountering one. [9]

Pausanias describes a Corinthian sanctuary of Athena Chalinitis, the Bridler. He relates that Athena tamed and bridled Pegasus before handing him to Bellerophon. The place and divine title anchor the encounter in a local religious landscape. A wonder often remembered as a rider’s achievement is here also an act of assistance: the hero receives a horse whose formidable freedom has already been brought within reach. [2]

Historical Record

Pindar’s Olympian 13 praises Corinth through the impossible capture, then leaves Bellerophon’s fate untold; Pegasus reaches Zeus’s stalls. The withheld ending separates the companion’s future from his rider’s achievement. A victorious partnership can be remembered without making their destinies identical. For the reader, that pause matters as much as a dramatic fall: it prevents possession of the horse from becoming a promise that every ascent will succeed. [4]

Two museum records show how enduring the image became. The British Museum’s early Corinthian stater presents the bridled horse in motion. A late-fourth-century BCE Corinthian silver coin at the Spurlock Museum pairs Pegasus on one side with a helmeted Athena on the other. Separate objects and dates reveal continued use of the motif. Their small surfaces connect horse and goddess without supplying a complete sequence of adventures. [9][10]

Appearance & Signs

Hawthorne makes the arrival a test of attention. Doubting adults turn away, while a child keeps watching the fountain. Pegasus appears through his reflection and comes close enough to crop clover. His white coat and silvery wings belong to Hawthorne’s rendering; the scene makes wonder visible through patient, ordinary looking. [7]

Aratus’ description demands a different kind of looking. The Horse’s belly lies near Andromeda’s head, and four conspicuous stars form a square. Its head and neck are fainter, except for the bright point at the nostril. The figure stops at the navel. Here recognisability comes from selected lights and their relations, not from a fully drawn pair of wings, four legs and a sweeping tail. [1]

Nature & Powers

Flight allows Bellerophon to confront the Chimera in Thomas Bulfinch’s retelling. The task has been arranged to destroy him, but Pegasus changes what the encounter permits: the rider can meet a creature whose fiery attack would otherwise make approach perilous. Later challenges also fail to kill the hero. The horse is therefore more than transportation; his impossible movement overturns the expectations of those who sent Bellerophon into danger. [6]

The constellation account attributed to Hyginus links the horse with a spring opened by its hoof on Mount Helicon. The same account makes Pegasus the survivor of Bellerophon’s attempt to ascend into heaven. The rider looks down, becomes frightened and falls to his death; the horse is placed among the stars. That particular ending assigns the failure to the rider’s response, without introducing a gadfly into the episode. [5]

Tales & Encounters

Hawthorne’s Bellerophon survives Pegasus’ effort to throw him, then secures control with the golden bit. Seeing the horse’s distress, he removes the bridle and lets him go. Pegasus flies away and returns. Their companionship begins when the rider gives up compulsory possession, making the horse’s decision as important as the hero’s courage. [7]

Bulfinch arranges the capture around a dream of Minerva offering a golden bridle. Waking with the gift, Bellerophon can approach the horse successfully. The story moves from helpless desire to an answer received during sleep, and then to action. In this telling, the bridle is the tangible link between the dream and the waking encounter. It enables the quest without making Pegasus an ordinary animal whose capture required only persistence. [6]

Landscape & Associations

Strabo places the capture beside Peirene at Corinth. In his account, Pegasus comes to drink and Bellerophon catches him there. Strabo also discusses the water itself: a spring on Acrocorinth remains full without overflowing, while the lower city’s supply is related to water passing through the hill. His treatment sets an inherited marvel alongside attention to an actual landscape. A spring can sustain both a city’s water and a story attached to that water. [3]

Helicon’s Horse Fountain belongs to another landscape. Aratus recounts the story that the horse struck the mountain and water welled from the hoof’s impression; the shepherds of Thespiae still used the fountain’s name in his account. Corinth’s drinking place and Helicon’s hoof-created spring are distinct settings. Their shared watery associations make them easy to combine in memory, although they play different parts in the surviving narratives. [1]

Variants & Kindred Beings

Hyginus records an alternative explanation for the celestial Horse that concerns Melanippe, daughter of Chiron, rather than Pegasus. Concealment, pregnancy and transformation shape that account. The collection also reports other explanations for her change into a mare. Such alternatives matter because a named constellation can gather competing stories. The familiar winged horse does not erase the other figure placed under the same celestial sign. [5]

Pegasus and the Gorgons meet through the horse’s origin story; Pegasus and the Chimera meet through Bellerophon’s adventure. Strabo says the winged horse emerged from Medusa’s neck when she was beheaded. These links do not make the three creatures variations of one another. The Griffin and Unicorn offer other comparisons in this bestiary: each joins a recognisable animal form to an extraordinary identity, while belonging to a separate narrative history. [3]

Meaning & Belief

Peirene’s imagery gives the legend a place within the city’s daily water. Pausanias describes an image of Bellerophon with Pegasus beside the fountain, where water ran through a hoof of the horse. The relationship is unusually concrete: a representation of the legendary animal participates in the movement of the spring. Pegasus is encountered there through a crafted object and flowing water, not solely through a recited adventure. [2]

Longfellow’s Pegasus in Pound turns the horse into an image of poetic freedom. Village authorities confine the wandering creature as an animal to be sold; curious visitors come, but the evening brings neither food nor shelter. At midnight Pegasus breaks his chain and opens his wings toward the stars. The village’s practical arrangements fail to accommodate him. What seems manageable within its fence belongs to a larger imaginative world. [8]

Later Retellings & Reception

The village in Longfellow’s poem is busy with harvest, bells and work. Pegasus arrives amid autumn colours, while the daily summons to labour sounds without celebrating him. These details make confinement a failure to recognise the unusual within familiar routines. His departure is quiet in its consequence: the villagers wake to their ordinary concerns and do not know where he has gone. Wonder leaves without winning their understanding. [8]

The Spurlock coin preserves a very different economy of recognition. Pegasus needs no extended narrative to occupy its reverse; Athena’s helmeted head supplies the opposite face. A modern reader may know the horse chiefly from a children’s story, but this ancient object gives access to a civic image that was already meaningful on a tiny surface. Museum description establishes the object’s identification and date, not every belief held by its original users. [10]

Redon’s drawing also makes restraint visible through its materials. The museum describes charcoal darkness interrupted by erasure and white heightening. Wings appear to quiver because earlier positions remain detectable, while the horse looms above its companion. In this interpretation, flight is anticipated within an image that cannot move. The drawing offers a different answer to Longfellow’s escaping steed: Pegasus can seem uncontainable through the way an artist leaves his form unsettled. [11]

Evidence & Open Questions

The endings cannot be combined without losing their differences. Hyginus describes a fatal fall after a frightened glance downward. Bulfinch includes Jupiter’s gadfly and a rider left blind and lame. Pindar declines to narrate the fate. Fear, divine punishment and poetic silence make different conclusions to the partnership. [5][6][4]

These records concern poems, religious places, coins and later artworks, not a documented flying species. Strabo sets a narrated capture beside his discussion of actual spring water: the observed water does not verify the horse. Aratus’ celestial outline likewise identifies a pattern without settling every story attached to it. Their different kinds of description remain valuable without becoming interchangeable evidence.
