A fiery-eyed animal spirit pursues night travellers in Jamaican stories, sometimes taking a bull’s shape with a chain rattling behind it.
Rolling Calf
Also recorded as Rollin calf, Rollen calf, Roaring calf
Donald Lee's 1975 account calls the rolling calf a cruel duppy associated with a dead butcher. Other tellings give the pursuing spirit different animal forms. The familiar fiery-eyed bull is one powerful image within that changing Jamaican tradition. [1]
