Above a mountain that human strength cannot climb, a great bird shelters an abandoned child. The Simurgh carries compassion into Persian epic and an elusive sovereignty into mystical poetry. Its splendour belongs to several kinds of story, whose meanings need not collapse into one portrait. [1][2]

Simurgh is the title used here; Simorḡ and Simorgh are alternative Roman spellings. The subject joins Persian epic and mystical poetry without making their encounters interchangeable. A name can open a conversation between works without requiring identical bodies or functions. Our reading keeps the difference visible, asking what a relationship with the bird makes possible in each selected text. Familiar English analogies can assist that comparison, but should not quietly turn another creature into an alias or decide the meaning of a Persian literary presence. [1][2][3]
Hanns-Peter Schmidt traces the name through older Iranian forms associated with a bird called Saēna. He also discusses the famous Persian play on thirty birds in Attar. The wordplay is a literary opportunity, not a sufficient explanation of the name’s historical origin. A reader can enjoy the moment when a company becomes a mirror without assuming that the creature was invented to produce that pun. Etymology and poetic interpretation answer different questions. [3]
The principal homeland of this manuscript is the Persian literary world. The Shahnama supplies an epic family history, while Attar’s poetry supplies a spiritual journey. The consulted English versions are themselves witnesses to translation and reception: James Atkinson combines prose and verse, and Edward FitzGerald substantially reshapes and abridges his source. Their wording is not presented as the entire Persian textual tradition. Keeping the editions visible allows an inviting story to retain its actual route into this bestiary. [1][2]
The bird also belongs to the history of painted books. The Met folio places a legendary family scene within a manuscript made centuries after the epic’s formation. Its attributed place and date describe that object, not the first existence of the story. The distinction gives the creature more historical depth: literary memory can continue through new materials, patrons, and visual conventions. The manuscript page is a crafted interpretation of a remembered episode rather than a specimen record. [4]
Atkinson’s Shahnama adaptation appears in the1909 revised Persian Literature. Its Simurgh finds the abandoned child while seeking food for its young. Compassion interrupts what might have been a predatory encounter. The scene makes a reader pause before treating appearance as destiny: recognition can be wrong, and a person excluded by one household can find care elsewhere. That ethical reading belongs to our engagement with the episode; it does not turn the narrator’s rejection into a judgement endorsed by this bestiary. [1]
The material trail includes a painted folio attributed to about 1330–40 and a much more uncertain twelfth-century bronze mirror. The mirror’s worn image has been interpreted in several ways, including Zāl carried by the Simurgh, but its human figure cannot securely be recognized. These records establish the existence of objects and interpretations at different dates. They do not supply an unbroken series of confirmed Simurgh portraits. An uncertain witness remains valuable when its uncertainty is part of the record. [4][5]
The Met’s interpretation places Zāl and his foster bird together on the mountain, with the father below. That arrangement provides scale without a measurement of wings or feathers. It asks a viewer to read a relationship across the page: a human life sheltered above, and a human parent approaching from beneath. Our comparison treats the surrounding space as part of the picture’s meaning. Great size becomes an opportunity to shelter someone vulnerable, rather than simply a way to overpower another creature. The Met painting offers a surviving visual arrangement of that relationship. Zāl appears in the nest and his repentant father stands below. Its curatorial account compares the bird’s form with conventions used in other centres of painting, but that comparison concerns artistic representation. It does not identify the Simurgh with every creature translated as phoenix. The new folio selects the nest scene, sheltering the white-haired infant Zāl beneath a great feathered wing. Its luminous plumage and new arrangement acknowledge an artistic response to the consulted adaptation and museum account rather than copying the historical painting. [4]
Zāl receives a feather with which to call the bird. For our reading, the gift makes care portable: a relationship need not end when someone leaves the place where it began. Its importance is relational before it is spectacular. The small object can stand for a continuing possibility of help, giving separation a different meaning from abandonment. An illustration might emphasize that difference through an open wing or a generous space between figures, without adding an episode which the selected scene does not depict. [1]
Later in the same adaptation, the Simurgh heals the wounded Rustem and his horse Rakhsh. Assistance does not remove every consequence. When asked how to overcome Isfendiyār, the bird warns that killing him will bring calamity. The counsel belongs to a tragic conflict involving formidable heroes, not a promise that a magical helper makes its beneficiary morally right or permanently safe. The most extraordinary power in this episode is accompanied by knowledge of a cost that human urgency struggles to accept. [1]
In Atkinson, dreams and reproach precede Sām’s return, and the bird brings Zāl down to him. Our reading attends to the order of recognition and action. Remorse must become a changed relationship, rather than remain a private feeling. The bird mediates that change; it makes the desired encounter possible instead of merely standing aside. A reunion can therefore carry an ethical question beyond whether two figures occupy the same place: what has changed in the way the returning person is able to see? [1]
The healing episode creates a different question: can help be compassionate when it also enables a destructive conflict to continue? The warning discussed above resists a straightforward triumphal reading. Our interpretation keeps the cost visible beside the aid, rather than reducing the helper to a collection of benevolent abilities. In that tension, loyalty does not automatically remove responsibility. The same reader who admires rescue can remain troubled by assistance offered within a struggle that seems to leave no harmless outcome. [1]
The Met locates the painted nest on Mount Elburz and reads its hares as signs of remoteness. That small detail gives the scene a landscape beyond the principal figures. For our interpretation, distance can be protective as well as lonely: the same space may look different from the perspective of someone exposed and someone sheltered. A new painting can respond to that tension through height and open air. It need not turn the literary mountain into directions for finding an actual nest. [4]
FitzGerald’s Bird Parliament sets the sovereign beyond a demanding journey toward Kaf. Waterless spaces, dangerous valleys, exhaustion, and misleading appearances turn travel into a test of the travellers themselves. The mountain is approached through transformed perception, not merely successful navigation. Its distance carries the poem’s spiritual argument. Mapping Kaf as though it were another stop in an epic itinerary would miss the reason the journey becomes harder as its goal seems nearer. [2]
The protective epic bird and Attar’s sovereign are related through a literary name but are encountered differently. Zāl knows a helper through an enduring personal bond. The travelling birds seek a king whose final revelation overturns their understanding of separateness. Comparing these works brings out that difference rather than making the poem a report of the epic bird’s kingdom. The roster’s Griffin, Roc, and Phoenix offer further comparisons of extraordinary birds; none is adopted here as an alias. [1][2]
Schmidt also cautions that the composite animal conventionally called Sēnmurw in some art scholarship has a disputed relationship to the Simurgh. A dog-like head and elaborate tail cannot simply be declared the bird’s original anatomy. The dispute also affects illustration: the new folio uses a feathered bird and does not depict the contested dog-headed composite. Its caption identifies the selected Zāl episode instead of asserting a settled original anatomy. A visually powerful image can preserve mystery without presenting contested identification as a settled traditional portrait. [3]
What makes a parent in the scene: resemblance, origin, care, or the willingness to change? Our reading treats that question as more compelling than deciding which body looks most familiar. A wondrous portrait can let nurture carry authority without pretending that every commentator draws the same lesson. It can also leave change possible instead of fixing a person forever in an initial failure. This interpretation follows the selected encounter, while remaining a reader’s argument rather than a claim about a universal Persian moral. [1]
The Bird Parliament requires a different frame. Thirty exhausted survivors reach the threshold and eventually see themselves in the revelation they sought. Their journey concerns spiritual transformation and the relation between individuality and unity. This bestiary records that poetic use without reducing Sufi thought to a creature’s supernatural statistics or adding a named deity to the roster. The aura of the scene comes from its reversal of ordinary seeing: the desired sovereign is no longer a separate shape waiting to be captured in a portrait. [2]
The consulted English witnesses show reception through selection. A shaped narrative can be inviting while still leaving much outside its frame. A modern retelling may inherit that frame without recognizing the decisions that produced it. Our reading therefore keeps translator and edition visible, allowing a reader to pursue fuller Persian texts and additional translations. Accessibility is valuable when it opens further possibilities; it becomes less useful if the familiar version makes every other encounter with the work seem unnecessary. [1][2]
The new artwork is another act of reception. It chooses the sheltering of infant Zāl, with the bird dominating the mountain nest and the small wrapped child safe beneath its wing. It does not combine the farewell feather, healing encounter and distant sovereign into one scene. The turquoise and copper plumage, dawn mountains and ornamental frame are artistic choices. The historical folio helps explain narrative scale and placement; it does not settle every disputed feature of the creature. [4][1][2]
The evidence supports a literary and artistic history, not a zoological finding. The epic and poem are directly consulted in specified English adaptations. Schmidt supplies a scholarly account of older terminology and disputed art identifications; those earlier Iranian texts are not falsely marked as separately read. The folio supports an object-specific account. The mirror supports a record of interpretive alternatives precisely because its central figure is uncertain. Each witness answers a different question about the creature’s remembered presence. [1][2][3][4][5]
The poem’s ending leaves a question for depiction: how can an image show a relationship between many and one without reducing the revelation to another large bird? For our reading, a visible portrait may preserve wonder while being unable to exhaust the encounter’s meaning. That difficulty helps keep the epic’s sheltering creature distinct from the poem’s sovereign presence. Fuller Persian editions and additional translations belong to future comparison; this scope follows specified English adaptations rather than claiming to settle every Iranian name or mystical interpretation. The reading trail includes two distinct literary works, a named scholarly article and scoped curatorial records. Atkinson and FitzGerald are adaptations, not substitutes for complete Persian critical editions. The bronze mirror remains uncertain; its curatorial record preserves possible interpretations rather than a securely identified epic portrait.
