In Jay Powell’s public Hoh watershed account, T’ist’ilal carries whales toward a lair beneath the Blue Glacier. The journey binds ocean, river country and mountain ice through the movements of a powerful being. [1]

Thunderbird here belongs to selected Hoh and Quileute accounts of the Olympic Peninsula. Powell’s Hoh watershed report uses T’ist’ilal for a being whose whale-carrying flights leave their mark on land. This is a story-bearing presence associated with a homeland, not an unidentified bird awaiting a biological classification. [1]
The name can invite a reader to look upward, but these accounts also lead toward the shore, the river valley and the ground beneath one’s feet. Their scale becomes intelligible through relationships: prey too large for ordinary birds, mountains made audible, and people who must consider what belongs to another powerful inhabitant of their world. The landscape gives the being’s grandeur a setting that an isolated monster portrait would lose.
The Quileute Tribe’s own public history describes a homeland of Pacific beaches, rainforest rivers and the glaciers of Mount Olympus. It presents winter storytelling, language teaching and inherited songs and dances as parts of community life. The page identifies ceremonial songs and dances as private family inheritances; those forms are not a general visual vocabulary for an illustrated creature. [2]
The same history describes an ocean-oriented life of fishing and sea-mammal hunting, with red cedar canoes built for coastal travel. Against that context, the scale of the whale-carrying being is striking: a creature normally encountered through skilled human voyaging becomes something a greater power can take across the sky. [2]
Reading the public stories in that setting changes the distance between observer and subject. A glacier does not become an empty stage merely because an outside visitor approaches it with a camera. The being is encountered within an inhabited country, where telling, inheritance and belonging have their own relationships. The region named in the title is therefore part of the meaning of this entry, rather than a decorative place label.
Albert B. Reagan and L. V. W. Walters published Tales from the Hoh and Quileute in 1933. The selected historical text reproduced by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network names Frank Bennett as the teller of Hunters Find the Thunderbird and Luke Hobucket for several other accounts. That record preserves credited voices through a collector-and-editor chain, not unmediated access to every original performance. [3]
Powell’s June 2013 Talking Raven column identifies separate routes of transmission: an account given by Bucket Mason to Reagan, and a telling Powell heard from Baker Kowoosh in 1968. Naming the teller makes an important difference. Even where a collector gathers related episodes together, the stories retain occasions, relationships and choices of emphasis rather than becoming one anonymous script. [4]
In the historical excerpt, the enormous being’s eyes produce lightning and its wings thunder and wind. Bennett’s hunters approach a mountain home and are driven away by rolling ice. These are signs of a powerful inhabitant defending a place, rather than a checklist of feathers and measurements. [3]
Sound and motion give this presence much of its force. A reader can imagine the scene changing before seeing a clear outline: brightness, noise, ice in motion, then the recognition that the mountain is inhabited. The public accounts leave room for an illustration to acknowledge scale and weather without pretending that a single drawing settles the being’s appearance. Its actions carry more narrative weight than a fixed face.
In Powell’s June column, a telling credited through Baker Kowoosh distinguishes an older Thunderbird from a surviving son. The older being is overcome in an encounter with K’wati; the son remains beneath the Blue Glacier, with flashing eyes and thunderous wings. An account of this kind contains kinship and change, not simply an immortal bird repeating the same hunt forever. [4]
That generational distinction gives the mountain presence a history within the story. Power can survive the defeat of another powerful being, but the surviving figure is not interchangeable with its predecessor. A reader following the sequence encounters an altered world, with relationships continuing after conflict. The result is more intricate than the image of a timeless storm symbol hovering above a landscape.
Hobucket’s Mimlos-Whale account repeatedly brings the opponents together and lets the whale escape. The struggle uproots trees; finally the whale reaches the deep ocean and Thunderbird abandons the chase. Another credited account turns the taking of Thunderbird’s whale into a deadly confrontation with people. The stories differ in their conflicts and do not make the bird invariably benevolent. [3]
A further telling discussed in Powell’s June column reaches him through Hal George, who heard Harold Johnson. Thunderbird’s anger produces overwhelming water; survivors travel in canoes, and communities become separated. Powell also notes a flood version that did not identify its cause. The difference belongs to the accounts themselves and should remain visible when they are read beside one another. [4]
The unsettled endings matter. A hunt may fail; a stolen meal may bring consequences; a flood may leave people searching for land. None requires the reader to force the same moral onto every episode. Following what each telling actually resolves—and what it leaves unresolved—lets the powerful being remain part of a larger story rather than reducing every encounter to a victory scene.
Powell’s November 2014 Talking Raven column discusses a whale rock and attributes the associated local recollections to William Penn. It records more than one explanation for a dropped whale: exhaustion and distraction in one, a struggling catch in another. The whale’s movement clears trees, linking the episode to open prairie country. The column also describes continuing to keep prairies open through burning. [5]
Claire Sianna Seaman’s Blue to Deep Blue, presented by Olympic National Park in 2023, approaches the same glacier through a contemporary painting of retreat. Her statement follows its water through Glacier Creek and the Hoh River to the Pacific. The park’s accompanying text recognizes the Thunderbird association beneath the ice. The painting and that acknowledgment belong to a modern presentation, not a newly collected traditional telling. [8]
The park also identifies a history of glacier research beginning with a hut established on the Snow Dome in 1957 for the International Geophysical Year. Its account sets study and changing ice beside the acknowledged story association. Neither form of attention requires the mountain to have only one history. [8]
These two readings of place can sit beside one another without becoming the same explanation. One follows the remembered movement of a whale; another follows changing ice and water. A landscape can carry both a narrative history and a changing physical present. The reader gains more from attending to that coexistence than from choosing a single label that is supposed to exhaust what a mountain means.
Ruth S. Ludwin and colleagues compare coastal accounts of shaking, inundation and Thunderbird-and-Whale conflict in their 2005 earthquake study. They observe that outcomes vary: Whale can drag Thunderbird downward, while other versions give Thunderbird the victory. Their comparison treats such differences as part of the record. It does not establish one canonical battle for every coastal nation. [6]
Roc likewise makes enormous size imaginable through a bird’s relation to what it carries. The linked Simurgh account provides another bird comparison, while Nāga and Inkanyamba connect powerful beings with water in different traditions. These reading connections help a reader notice motifs. They do not establish shared identities, a common origin, or interchangeable sacred meanings.
The Quileute Tribe’s visitor guidance states that spiritual teachings, sacred ceremonies and burial grounds are not openly shared with the public. It asks visitors to respect residential privacy, seek permission before recording people or activities, and leave artifacts and natural objects in place. A publicly readable account therefore does not grant access to every practice or place that may be associated with it. [7]
That boundary has a practical meaning for wonder. Admiring a powerful story does not require possessing the things through which another family remembers it. The encounter offered here is with the selected public words and their attributed tellers. It can remain compelling without turning a mountain into a destination for collecting objects or a private inheritance into a catalogue of designs.
Seaman uses layered colour to place the glacier’s earlier and later extents within one painting. Her statement moves from the disappearance of ice to the transformation of the watershed. The work gives the mountain a temporal depth of its own: different moments are visible together, and the river connects the high ice to the coast. Its focus is environmental change, not a reconstruction of Thunderbird’s anatomy. [8]
Powell’s community-published columns offer another contemporary presence for the stories: named recollections are discussed with readers in a living tribal newspaper. Their explanations can attend to family tellers, the order of events and familiar stretches of country. The continuing act of telling is meaningful in itself, even when a reader encounters it through a written column rather than at its original occasion. [5]
Ludwin and colleagues explicitly state that none of the Thunderbird-and-Whale stories in their study is datable. Their discussion compares narrative features with earthquake and tsunami effects, while separate historical accounts and physical evidence support consideration of the 1700 Cascadia event. That distinction matters: a resemblance between a story and a hazard is not a date for every telling, and the paper does not verify a biological bird. [6]
The study acknowledges that collecting, translating and transcribing influence the surviving record. A published English passage is consequently one encounter with a story, shaped by its route onto the page. Attending to those routes gives the named tellers their place in a comparison that might otherwise sound anonymous. [6]
The material consulted here supports an attributed account of stories, transmission, place and interpretation. It leaves many histories of telling beyond the present selection. Its strongest questions concern how particular narrators give shape to power and consequence: who tells of the glacier, who follows the escaping whale, and what a changed landscape carries forward. Those questions sustain the mystery without replacing living traditions with an invented universal creature.
Begin with Powell’s Hoh watershed account and the Quileute Tribe’s own history and visitor guidance. The Talking Raven columns provide named transmission routes. Read the historical collection through its collector-and-editor mediation, and the earthquake paper through its stated dating limit. Seaman’s statement supplies a separately authored contemporary landscape response. Only the specified public passages were consulted; no private teaching or community endorsement is claimed.
