Names & Creature Profile

The scholarly Norwegian reference Store norske leksikon treats troll as a term whose meaning changed over time. Its authors distinguish older usages, later beliefs, nineteenth-century collected tales and present entertainment. They also describe differences among Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Large threatening figures are familiar in Norwegian tales, but size and disposition are not uniform. The entry’s stated uncertainty about the word’s original meaning is retained here; a familiar modern figure does not settle its etymology or the boundaries of every earlier use. [1]

For this file, the name opens a reading trail rather than a biological category. A bridge antagonist, a household invader and a mountain court can all be discussed, provided their works are identified. Calling them versions is more useful than forcing them to share a species chart. It lets readers ask which qualities a particular story needs: strength, appetite, ownership, estrangement or a distorted imitation of human society. Those needs help explain why a troll’s body and behaviour can change between narratives.

Popular Tales from the Norse presents English translations by George Webbe Dasent of material collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. Its stories are therefore mediated through collection, editing and translation. The edition’s contents place several encounters under the name Troll while other antagonists are rendered Giant or an older woman. The English wording is a useful historical witness, but cannot replace checking the Norwegian terms or recovering individual tellers. This manuscript has read selected tales, rather than asserting consultation of the complete collectors’ archive. [2]

Historical Record

Grettir’s Saga offers an encounter unlike a modern children’s bridge story. In chapters 64–65, Grettir, temporarily called Guest, stays in a troubled household over Yule. A huge troll-wife enters at midnight with a trough and a large cutting tool. Their struggle destroys the fittings of the house and continues toward the river. He wounds her and survives, but the narration subsequently distinguishes his account from what local people say happened. This is a literary record with internally acknowledged disagreement. [3]

Appearance & Signs

In Dasent’s The Three Billy-Goats Gruff, the troll beneath the bridge has conspicuously large eyes and a long nose. The Cat on the Dovrefell gives a crowd much greater variation: large and small trolls, some with tails and some without. These descriptions do not support making one tail shape or scale compulsory. Nasjonalmuseet’s collection record identifies Theodor Kittelsen’s 1882 illustration of the Ash Lad threatening to squeeze a supposed white stone, a separate historical artwork with its own title and materials. The finished original folio chooses the constrained bridge crossing in The Three Billy-Goats Gruff, collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe and translated by Dasent. Its appearance, stillness and moonlight are artistic choices within that selected scene. They do not define the body or behavior of every Scandinavian troll. Keeping the bridge visible explains the encounter without copying Kittelsen’s distinctive composition or treating a museum illustration as an anatomical specimen. The completed artwork remains an original interpretation of that selected scene.

Nature & Powers

Boots Who Ate a Match with the Troll makes physical strength and misunderstanding work together. The troll threatens a boy cutting timber in a wood it claims as its own. Boots squeezes soft cheese while pretending it is stone, making the threat of superior strength convincing. The troll then helps with the wood. Heavy water vessels reveal a later mismatch in real strength, which the boy again hides through an extravagant proposal. The encounter is shaped by interpretation and negotiation before it becomes an eating contest. [2]

This is a useful distinction from magic as an all-purpose power. Extraordinary labour belongs to the antagonist, but the protagonist wins room to act through an ordinary object and a false explanation. The tale invites the audience to see what the troll fails to notice. It is also uncomfortable: a claim to woodland becomes a contest in which the strongest figure is not necessarily the one who controls the story. That reading is an editorial response to this episode, rather than a rule about every troll’s intelligence. [2]

Tales & Encounters

The Three Billy-Goats Gruff stages its encounter through repeated crossings. Two smaller goats persuade the troll to await a larger meal. The biggest goat finally confronts it, and the sequence allows the group to reach grazing on the hillside. The bridge concentrates the action: the sound of crossing announces each animal, the threatened meal gives a reason for delay, and relative size changes the outcome. This familiar version supplies an exact narrative setting, not evidence that bridge guarding is the universal occupation of trolls. [2]

The Cat on the Dovrefell supplies a different kind of invasion. Trolls displace Halvor’s household for their Christmas feast until a traveller’s white bear, mistaken for a cat, frightens them away. A later claim about the supposed cat’s offspring discourages their return. Here the domestic feast and a comic misidentification matter more than the bridge’s repeated bargaining. Comparing these episodes keeps several kinds of danger visible: blocked travel, lost access to a home, and force redirected by a better story. [2]

Landscape & Associations

The Grettir episode ties disagreement about the troll-wife’s fate to a rock resembling a woman beside a river. Grettir’s account sends her into the water; local people connect the struggle and dawn with the standing formation. The text preserves an explanation of a landscape feature, but that explanation is not geological evidence. The river, broken house and rock together create an environment where absence leaves signs that characters interpret differently. The passage therefore supports a specific stone-transformation association without establishing a universal sunlight law. [3]

The Norwegian reference also discusses dramatic formations and place names associated with trolls or giants. That scholarly account is a guide to cultural naming, not permission to identify every boulder as a body. A useful landscape chapter follows a named tale to a named feature and keeps the geological question separate from the story that gives the place social meaning. It can explain why an unusual shape invites narration while leaving both the formation’s physical history and a community’s interpretation open to further review. [1]

The consulted works already contain substantial variation: a single bridge figure, a mixed crowd at a feast, a powerful troll-wife and the troll court of Peer Gynt. The Norwegian reference also notes variation in scale and temperament across Scandinavian traditions. Those differences caution against constructing a universal skin colour, number of heads or degree of hostility. Four collection links are chosen for particular comparisons: Cyclops for strength, food and the outsider in a dwelling; Oni for a locally grounded figure whose later popular appearance is not its entire history; Trimobe for comparing separately documented giant antagonists; and Brownie for contrasting a domestic helper with an invading household feast. None is called a Scandinavian troll under another name. Each link asks the reader to compare narrative relationships and evidence, not to infer a common ancestry from a broad resemblance.

Meaning & Belief

Ibsen’s Peer Gynt turns a troll encounter into a debate about conduct and selfhood. In Act II the mountain ruler distinguishes human expectations from the troll’s self-sufficiency. The proposed transformation involves accepting the court’s perspective rather than merely gaining a monstrous body. The consulted Archer translation lets the reader see the philosophical contrast in dialogue. This is Ibsen’s authored dramatic use of the tradition, and it should not be cited as proof that every earlier teller expressed the same moral system. [4]

Placed beside the woodland contest, the play alters what cleverness means. Boots’ deception solves an immediate danger; Peer’s relationship with the court raises questions about whether a person can evade responsibility by treating personal satisfaction as enough. The comparison is a reading of two works with different purposes. It demonstrates that a troll can serve as more than an easily defeated strong figure, while leaving the collector’s tale and the dramatist’s satire intact as separate voices. [2][4]

Later Retellings & Reception

Nasjonalmuseet’s Eventyrskatten educational exhibition describes illustration as a force that has shaped public perceptions of Norwegian tale characters. Its account asks how drawings describe and enlarge textual scenes, rather than treating them as neutral copies. Kittelsen’s dated drawing belongs to that visual reception. An encyclopedia should consequently credit the artists and acknowledge the shift from collected wording to a memorable visual form, while keeping original commissions separate from reproductions of historical work. Ellen Rees’s 2011 analysis of Trolljegeren reads the film’s familiar folktale and Kittelsen references alongside its satire of bureaucracy and contemporary Norway. She discusses the bridge-and-goats tableau and the relocation of monsters into a modern state’s concealed management system. The consulted paper establishes that critical interpretation; the film itself was not watched for this manuscript. Its mock-documentary form must remain labelled fiction, even when it uses the visual language of recorded encounters. [7]

Evidence & Open Questions

The sources support a history of stories, terminology and representation. They do not supply a verified living specimen or a controlled scientific test. The saga’s preserved disagreement is especially instructive: a rock can function as a narrative sign without resolving what happened to a character. A museum catalogue documents an artwork, while a film scholar analyzes an invented documentary. The strength of each source lies in its own domain, and transferring that authority to a zoological claim would change the question without adding evidence. [3][5][7]

The remaining review should compare Norwegian and Icelandic terms, establish the consulted saga translation’s edition history, and examine teller and manuscript records before making origin claims. Scandinavian breadth also calls for regional expertise beyond the Norwegian and Icelandic examples emphasized here. A clear file can leave those limits visible while offering developed, specific encounters. The troll’s continuing appeal comes partly from its adaptability; careful attribution allows that variety to remain a discovery for the reader rather than a contradiction to be erased.
