A magically created being carries harm toward an enemy in Greenlandic accounts; later tupilak carvings give that dangerous presence many imaginative forms.
Tupilak
Also recorded as Tupilaq
Inge Kleivan describes the tupilak as a being secretly made to harm another person, often from jealousy. The word now also names small carved figures. Those related uses carry different histories; the harmful presence and its artistic representations cannot simply be treated as interchangeable. [1]
