In the Noh play Tsuchigumo, a spider spirit disguised as a monk attacks the bedridden Raikō, then fights the warriors who follow its blood to an old mound.
Tsuchigumo: the Noh Spider
Also recorded as 土蜘蛛, Earth Spider, Ground Spider
A stranger approaches the sick warrior’s pillow and answers a question about his name with a poem about a spider. Then white threads fly. Raikō reaches for the sword beside his bed, but his cut begins a pursuit rather than ending the danger. The Noh play Tsuchigumo carries the attack from an intimate room to a broken mound, where a retainer must finish what his vulnerable lord began. [1]
