Yawkyawk — water spirits in public story and art
Also recorded as Yawkyawk, Ngalkunburriyaymi
Two sisters camp by a waterhole. Their cooking fire angers Ngalyod, the Rainbow Serpent, who swallows them. In the National Museum’s account, they become water spirits. Later artists give such beings bodies of carved wood or dyed pandanus, with their own distinctive shapes and histories. [1][3][2]
