Dysphania militaris
Lepidoptera / Geometridae
Dysphania militaris is a yellow-and-black geometrid moth with bold wing patches and, in typical forms, a black-ringed abdomen. Its striking adult pattern accompanies a life cycle documented through rearing in Hong Kong and photographic observations in Bali.
Read the species account
Black patches interrupt the yellow wing areas. The hindwing’s central dark patch is comparatively large and irregular, with a black bar extending towards the inner margin. Typical militaris also has black at the hindwing base and black abdominal rings. The Hainan form abnegata differs in these features. [1]
Holloway places the species across the Oriental region into Sundaland. Locality-dated observations include Hong Kong, Thailand, the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia and Bali. The photographed Malaysian individual was recorded near Tanah Rata; the Bali records document adults and immature stages at several localities. [1][2]
