Euschemon rafflesia
Lepidoptera / Hesperiidae
The Regent Skipper is an Australian rainforest butterfly with yellow-spotted dark wings, scarlet body accents and a wing-coupling structure exceptional among butterflies.
Read the species account
Euschemon rafflesia is the sole living species assigned to the skipper subfamily Euschemoninae. Its distinctive anatomy once prompted debate over whether it belonged with moths or butterflies. [1]
The dark wings carry strong yellow patches, with blue-green colour visible in fresh specimens. The abdomen has yellow bands and a red tip; scarlet also occurs beneath the head and abdomen. Adults measure around 5 cm across the wings. [2]
The Regent Skipper inhabits eastern Australian rainforest. The northern subspecies alba occurs in Queensland, while the nominate subspecies extends south into New South Wales. [2]
Females lay ribbed eggs singly beneath leaves. Green larvae have pale longitudinal stripes and a dark head; they develop within shelters made by joining leaves. The pale, dark-marked pupa remains secured inside a shelter. [2]
Larval hosts belong to Monimiaceae. Recorded food plants include Steganthera laxiflora and several Wilkiea species, among them W. huegeliana and W. macrophylla. [2]
Caterpillars remain concealed in their leaf shelters during daylight and feed at night. [2]
Males possess a frenulum and retinaculum: a bristle-and-catch arrangement that links forewing and hindwing during flight. This apparatus, widespread among moths, makes the Regent Skipper exceptional among living butterflies. [1]
A museum-vouchered mitochondrial study in 2017 supported Euschemon as an early branch of the skipper family, outside all sampled subfamilies except the earlier-diverging Coeliadinae. Together with earlier morphological and DNA analyses, this supports its recognition as a separate subfamily. [1]
