Lucanus cervus
Coleoptera / Lucanidae
Lucanus cervus is a European stag beetle distinguished by the male’s enlarged, antler-like mandibles and reddish-brown wing covers. Most of its life is spent as a wood-feeding larva; the adult emerges for a brief summer breeding season.

Lucanus cervus (Linnaeus, 1758) belongs to Lucanidae in Coleoptera. [2]
Males usually have reddish-brown wing covers and antler-like mandibles contrasting with a darker head and thorax. Small males can be nearly uniform blackish brown. Females have much smaller jaws. [2]
The monitoring review records males 30–89 mm and females 25–49 mm long, including the mandibles. [2]
Female wing covers have a brown sheen; the lesser stag beetle, Dorcus parallelipipedus, is matt black and more squarely built. [1]
Across Europe, the species occupies broad-leaved woodland and other habitats containing suitable dead wood. [2]
British populations are concentrated in southern England. Parks, gardens and orchards also support breeding populations. [1]
In Britain, development takes roughly three to seven years, mainly as an underground larva. After about six weeks of pupation in autumn, the adult remains underground over winter and emerges in May or June, with males appearing first. [1]
Larvae consume decaying wood and its organisms, especially white-rotted broad-leaved timber. Adults take sap and decomposing-fruit fluids, supplementing stored larval reserves. [1]
A three-year comparison of five monitoring methods in two Italian forests found evening transects effective, while baited traps detected few beetles. All five methods recorded more males, reflecting adult activity rather than directly measuring the population’s sex ratio. [2]
Analysis of 1735 European transect walks found regional differences in adult phenology. Activity peaked later in the southeastern transects than in the northern and southwestern groups. Warmer conditions increased sightings most clearly in the northern region; in the southeast, activity decreased at temperatures above about 25°C. [3]
Retaining old stumps and decaying broad-leaved timber preserves larval habitat in woodland and urban landscapes. [1]
Keep the enclosure closed and display it in indirect light, away from heat and damp conditions. Handle the frame by its edges and clean only its exterior according to the maker’s instructions.
