Phloeodes diabolicus

Phloeodes diabolicus is a flightless western North American beetle with a rough, heavily reinforced exoskeleton. Interlocking joints and layered wing-cover material resist compression, making its armour a subject of biomechanical research.

The adult has a rough, compact, dark exoskeleton. Its hardened wing covers are joined along a mechanically interlocking midline and supported against the ventral body wall. [1]
The species occurs in the California Floristic Province, including the Transverse Ranges, Sierra Nevada and areas north to Mount Shasta. Adults have been collected beneath dead-tree bark and decaying logs. [2]
Adults feed on fungi beneath the bark of dead hardwood and coniferous trees. [2]
Mechanical testing and microscopy identified interdigitated sutures whose rounded, layered elements remain engaged under deformation. This architecture increases toughness by allowing controlled damage within the layers before the joint separates. [1]
A 2010 study of southern Californian populations found less geographic genetic structure in P. diabolicus than in its neighbouring relative P. plicatus. The authors interpreted the sampled pattern as evidence of a more recent population expansion. [2]

Keep the enclosure closed and display it in indirect light, away from heat and damp conditions. Handle the frame by its edges and clean only its exterior according to the maker’s instructions.
