Schizodactylus monstrosus
Orthoptera / Schizodactylidae
Schizodactylus monstrosus is a robust, nocturnal cricket adapted to loose, moist sand. Broad feet and unusually rolled adult wings distinguish its body, while each individual occupies a deep burrow excavated with its jaws.

Schizodactylus monstrosus belongs to Schizodactylidae in Orthoptera. The accepted name is attributed to Drury, 1773. [3]
The robust adult has green fore- and mid-leg tibiae. Its wings roll posteriorly into a spiral above the paired cerci at the abdominal tip. [1]
Khattar described nine nymphal instars and a life cycle lasting more than one year. [1]
Both nymphs and adults are carnivorous. [1]
Nymphs and adults are nocturnal and avoid direct sunlight. Each excavates a solitary, unbranched tunnel using its jaws and closes the entrance with a projecting plug of sand. [1]
In the described population, tunnels descended at approximately 60 degrees to the surface. Their depth increased with instar, reaching about two feet in adults. [1]
The saddle-shaped pronotum curves downward at the sides, forming a collar over the forelegs. A row of bristles follows its posterior margin; the authors of the 2025 morphological study proposed that these bristles prevent sand entering the adjacent membranous region. [2]
