Trachelophorus giraffa
Coleoptera / Attelabidae
Trachelophorus giraffa is a Madagascar leaf-rolling weevil with a glossy black body, red wing covers and an exceptionally elongated male forebody. The long, narrow prothorax gives the beetle its giraffe-like profile.
Read the species account
The Royal Ontario Museum’s male specimen has red, finely grooved wing covers contrasting with a black head, prothorax, antennae and legs. Its narrow prothorax is markedly elongated, while the wing covers form a compact oval at the rear. [1]
The species occurs in Madagascar, where Lund University’s entomological collection documents two specimens. [2]
Jekel described the species as Apoderus giraffa in 1860. It is the type species of Trachelophorus, the genus also established by Jekel. [3]
Keep the enclosure closed and display it in indirect light, away from heat and damp conditions. Handle the frame by its edges and clean only its exterior according to the maker’s instructions.
