Purpose in the text
The first Mars notice assigns invocation of Martian spirits, particularly those whose names appear within the diagram. The inscribed company supplies the specific names for that planetary summons. [1]
The diagram and its inscriptions
An eight-spoked figure carries distinct terminal characters within an outer ring of names. Mathers gives Madimiel, Bartzachiah, Eschiel and Ithuriel. [1]
Reading the design
Mathers identifies the eight terminal signs as Mars’s mystical characters. Together with the encircling names, they establish the wheel’s planetary identity. Later Mars designs retain invocation alongside more particular offices of healing, conflict and weather. [1]
