Purpose in the text
The second lunar pentacle protects against dangers of water and quiets storms. Its notice also connects the disturbance with lunar spirits: showing them the figure is said to bring tranquillity. [1]
The diagram and its inscriptions
A pointing hand and Hebrew names occupy the field inside circular bands. The editor identifies El and Abariel, with Psalm 56:11 around the edge. [1]
Reading the design
Mathers reads El and Abariel beside the pointing hand. Psalm 56:11 speaks of trust in God and freedom from fear of what a person can do. The hand appears again in the next three lunar designs, creating a visual sequence in which names and verses distinguish protection at sea, travel, defence from sorcery and nocturnal answers. [1]
