Purpose in the text
The final lunar notice assigns heavy rain to the pentacle. It specifies silver and placement beneath water in a lunar hour, with the rain continuing while the figure remains submerged. [1]
The diagram and its inscriptions
An eight-spoked wheel carries lunar characters within a verse band. Mathers identifies lunar characters and Genesis 7:11–12. [1]
Reading the design
Lunar characters end the spokes of the wheel. Genesis 7:11–12 surrounds them with the opening of the deep and heaven’s windows in the Flood account. The verse gives rain a cosmic scale, whereas the notice describes a controlled duration. Figure 54 appears on Plate XIII, later in the volume than the first five lunar designs. [1]
