Goetia 1904
Scot’s Vapula makes a person skilled in handicrafts, philosophy and sciences contained in books. The Goetia gives Naphula as an alternative and expands the phrasing to handicrafts and professions, philosophy and other sciences. The winged lion, duke’s rank and thirty-six legions continue through both accounts. [2][1]
Scot’s reference to sciences contained in books sets written learning beside handicrafts and philosophy. Marbas’s mechanical arts offer another instance of instruction in skilled making. The Goetia adds professions to Vapula’s description, broadening the kinds of cultivated work named alongside the learned subjects. [2][1]
