The forest witch can threaten a visitor with the oven, test impossible work, or provide the gift that makes an escape possible.
Baba Yaga
Also recorded as Yaga, Baba Yaga Bony Leg
The girl brings oil for the gates, bread for the dogs and bacon for the cat. These small provisions become her way out of Baba Yaga’s house. When the witch orders her servants to stop the fugitive, each remembers a kindness its mistress never offered. Yet other visitors leave the same dangerous household with rewards. Baba Yaga’s question is always particular: who has come to her door, and what will happen before they leave? [1]
