In Koshchei the Deathless, Ivan’s two elder brothers set out to find their stolen mother and fail to return. The youngest insists on following. An old woman directs him to a chained heroic horse underground. He initially insults her, then accepts her help, pays her and asks her blessing. Reunited with his brothers, he moves a heavy iron rock that opens a ladder up an otherwise inaccessible mountain. He leaves them a glass containing his blood as a sign of danger and climbs alone. [1]
A captive princess explains how to enter her enclosure and tests whether he can lift Koschei’s enormous sword. He can, and reaches his mother in another house. She hides him when the captor returns, then learns his secret: beneath an oak lies a casket, inside it a hare, inside the hare a duck, and inside the duck the egg containing his death. On the journey, hungry Ivan spares a young wolf, a crow and a young pike. The pike’s mother stretches across the sea so he can reach the oak. [1]
The hare escapes, but a wolf catches it. The duck flies out, and the crow and her young bring it back. Ivan takes the egg, only to drop it into the sea while washing it. The pike retrieves it and again makes a bridge with her body. Back at his mother’s house, he squeezes the egg until Koschei bends in pain. The captor begs for a partnership that would place the world at their feet. Ivan refuses, breaks the egg and kills him. [1]
Rescue does not end the tale. Ivan lowers his mother and the princess to his brothers, then returns for the princess’s wedding clothes, ring and seamless shoes. The brothers cut away the ladder and force the women to keep silent. The ring summons twelve youths who carry Ivan down. At home he lodges with an old woman, supplies the required wedding objects through her, and finally appears beside the princess in church. They marry before his elder brother arrives. The father learns the betrayal, banishes the brothers and makes Ivan his heir.
