A vanishing wild ass becomes the demon who lifts Rostam into the air; the hero survives by asking for the opposite of what he wants.
Akvān-e Dīv
Also recorded as Akvan, Akwan, The demon Akvān
Rostam wakes on a piece of ground held above the earth by a demon. Akvān offers him a choice: be thrown onto the mountains or into the sea. In Helen Zimmern’s English retelling, the hero pretends to dread the water. The demon chooses it to deny him rest. Rostam escapes the fall—and must now fight sea creatures with one hand while swimming with the other. [1]
