A night attacker devastates Heorot; his mother’s revenge carries Beowulf from the hall into a dangerous dwelling beneath the water.
Grendel and his Mother
Also recorded as Grendel’s mother, Grendles modor
Grendel reaches for another sleeping man and meets a grip stronger than his own. The struggle tears the feast hall’s benches apart, and he escapes with a mortal wound, leaving his arm behind. The Danes celebrate. Then his mother comes to recover the trophy and avenge her son. One victory has opened a second encounter, in a place where Beowulf’s trusted sword will fail. [1]
