Orkney’s skinless sea monster combines equine and human forms; one recorded encounter ends at a freshwater burn.
Nuckelavee
Also recorded as Nuckleavee
Tammas has the sea on one side and a freshwater loch on the other. Something enormous approaches along the narrow road. Turning his back would be dangerous, so he faces it until a step into the loch sends a splash against its leg. The Nuckelavee recoils. Ahead lies the small running stream that may let him escape a creature blamed for sickness, ruined crops and disasters from the sea. [1]
