Purpose in the text

The diagram and its inscriptions
A five-by-five Hebrew letter square is enclosed by a circular inscription. Mathers identifies it with the SATOR / AREPO / TENET / OPERA / ROTAS square and cites Psalm 72:8 around it. [1]
Reading the design
Mathers connects the Hebrew square with the Latin SATOR palindrome. He adds unity to its twenty-five letters to obtain twenty-six, the value he assigns to IHVH, and compares the surrounding verse’s value, with Elohim added, to the square. His proposed derivation of the Latin square rests on this numerical interpretation. [1]
