Purpose in the text
The final Saturn notice attributes earthquakes to the immense power of the angelic orders invoked through the pentacle. Their combined presence is described as sufficient to make the universe tremble. [1]
The diagram and its inscriptions
Broad inscribed sides form an inverted triangle within a circular verse. Mathers identifies the names of nine orders of angels in Hebrew and the Passing of the River alphabet, with Psalm 18:7 around them. [1]
Reading the design
Mathers identifies nine orders: Chaioth Ha-Qadesch, Auphanim, Aralim, Chaschmalim, Seraphim, Melakim, Elohim, Beni Elohim and Kerubim. Six names use ordinary Hebrew characters and three use the Passing of the River alphabet. Psalm 18:7 gives the enclosing image of the earth and the foundations of the hills shaking, so the verse and the hierarchy describe the same upheaval in different forms. [1]
