Mixed colours distinguish Mercury’s five pentacles. Invocation, elusive spirits who answer questions, knowledge, embassies and opened doors give this small group several offices of communication and access. [1]
The first and third Mercury pentacles invoke spirits. The second promises effects contrary to the order of nature and ready answers from spirits difficult to see. The fourth joins knowledge of created and hidden things to embassies performed by the Allatori. The fifth opens closed doors, extending the group’s concern with access from information to passage. [1]
Stars, a wheel and divided circles
The first pentagram forms Yekahel and Agiel. Names cross the second in a horizontal band, with Boel singled out by Mathers. Kokaviel, Ghedoriah, Savaniah and Chokmahiel encircle the third’s wheel. The fourth surrounds El with a twelve-pointed construction and Hebrew and Latin sentences. In the fifth, El, Ab and IHVH occupy a quartered circle. [1]
Making hidden things accessible
The second notice distinguishes readily obtained speech from elusive appearance. The fourth gives stabilising language to its interior: in Mathers’s reading, the sentence asks IHVH to fix the volatile and restrict the void. Its outer wording concerns wisdom and knowledge. Psalm 24:7 surrounds the last design with doors raised for the King of Glory. A related office appears in the first Moon pentacle, whose drawn gateway and Psalm 107:16 express opening through the breaking of gates and bars. [1]
